FONT NAME: RECORDERS VERSION: 1.2 DESIGNED BY: Hiawatha DISTRIBUTED BY: Dr H Fontricks, Unc. COPYRIGHT: 2013 by Hiawatha; All Rights Reserved; None Returned BACKGROUND: As a music composer I found that while there are many fine music notation programs available, I occasionally had need of certain notational symbols in basic font form. I found some music fonts available on the Web, but where I didn't find what I was looking for, I decided to design my own. RECORDERS is he second of my efforts to reach completion. FEATURES: * RECORDERS is a standard True Type font, which should be installed in the standard way on your system. * Fingerings have been tested with ALTO, SOPRANO, TENOR, and SOPRANINO recorders; many may also work for BASS and GREAT BASS recorders (but see "disclaimer," below). * RECORDERS includes 124 symbols (see attached PDF font map for details): + 88 fingerings for the Baroque-style recorder ( with double-holes for the 3rd and 4th right hand fingers) - 61 of the most common fingerings are available directly from the keyboard - 25 additional fingerings are accessible by various "alt" codes ("ALT key" plus a 4-digit number) + 36 other symbols useful for recorder music (trills, mordents, turns, vibrato, flutter-tongue, breath mark, etc.) * Each octave of fingerings is assigned to a single row of keys, notes arranged lowest-to-highest from left to right: + Top Row (1 - equals sign): Lowest octave (12 notes), beginning with low C/F on the '1' key + Second Row (q - brackets0: Second octave (12 notes) + Third Row (a - l): Third octave (8 notes) + Fourth Row: Provides a blank diagram and various filled holes for creating additional fingerings with the "overstrike" feature found in many word-processors. * Lower case keyboard symbols give the most standard fingerings; using the shift-key accesses the next most common alternate fingering for those notes which have them. * Alt-codes give 25 additional fingerings frequently used to facilitate trills and otherwise tricky passages. * Refer to the attached "QWERTY Map" for the location of keyboard-available fingerings and symbols. LEGAL STATUS: The RECORDERS font is provided as _FREEWARE_ , with the following RESTRICTIONS: * You may use it freely for _non-commercial_ purposes, at no charge. * You may freely copy and distribute it to others provided: 1) you make no changes to the font; 2) you include this _read_me file and the copyright notice, which every distributed copy; 3) you do not charge for distribution of the font. * You may NOT SELL this font, to anyone, for any reason: it must be provided freely, or not at all. * If you wish to use this font commercially, you must contact me and get my permission. Depending on your proposed application I may give you permission to use it for free, or I may require a nominal charge of up to $25 for use of the font. But you must contact me. + NON-COMMERCIAL USE examples: preparing manuscripts of your own compositions or arrangements for study, practice, copyright filing, premier performance, or other not-for-profit performances. + COMMERCIAL USE examples: preparing manuscripts for formal publication, sale, or other widespread distribution; preparing score or parts for use in for-profit performances; preparation of method, history, theory, or other printed or electronic texts of documents intended for sale for profit; development of logos and illustrations for items intended for sale for profit (e.g., balloons; coffee mugs; T-shirts; etc.) DISCLAIMERS: NO GUARANTEES OR WARRANTEES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, ARE MADE FOR THIS FONT,: * Use it at your own risk. I am not a professional font developer: This font was developed on a Windows PC system, and may or may not work as expected on Apple, Mac, or other non-PC systems. * I am a musician, but recorder is not my primary instrument. All fingerings have been tested and verified to work on several models of Alto, Soprano, Tenor, and Sopranino recorder. However, recorders are notoriously quirky instruments, and these fingerings may not give the same results on all recorders. Bass and Great Bass recorders are especially quirky, and I have not personally tested these fingerings on those instruments. * Possibly I failed to include one or more symbols that every professional recorder player thinks is essential. Probably I created a few oddballs that nobody ever uses. So be it; c'est la vie; whatever. To the best of my knowledge, at the time of this writing (August 2013) this is the most complete _free_ recorder fingering font available. If you think you can do better, go for it. + Feel free to e-mail me with any comments or suggestions. + If you write to me please include the words "RECORDERS FONT" in the subject line of your e-mail header. + I lead a very busy life, so I may not respond promptly, but your e-mail will eventually be acknowledged, if I receive it.
