There may, however, be some cases where you need to bundle a font with the document. Certain document formats may allow the inclusion of an unmodified font within their file structure which consists of a compressed folder containing the various resources forming the document (such as pictures and thumbnails). Including fonts within such a structure is understood as being different from embedding but rather similar to bundling (or mere aggregation) for which the licensing makes explicit provision. In this case the font is conveyed unchanged whereas embedding a font transforms it from the original format. The OFL does not allow anyone to extract the font from such a structure to then redistribute it under another license. The explicit permission to redistribute and embed does not cancel the requirement for the Font Software to remain under the license chosen by its Author(s). 1.13 If OFL fonts are extracted from a document in which they are embedded (such as a PDF file), what can be done with them? Is this a risk to Author(s)? The few utilities that can extract fonts embedded in a PDF will only output limited amounts of outlines - not a complete font. To create a working font from this method is much more difficult than finding the source of the original OFL font. So there is little chance that an OFL font would be extracted and redistributed inappropriately through this method. Even so, copyright laws address any misrepresentation of authorship. All Font Software released under the OFL and marked as such by the Author(s) is intended to remain under this license regardless of the distribution method, and cannot be redistributed under any other license. We strongly discourage any font extraction - we recommend directly using the font sources instead - but if you extract font outlines from a document please be considerate, use your common sense and respect the work of the Author(s) and the licensing model. 1.14 What about sharing OFL fonts with friends on a CD, DVD or USB stick? You are very welcome to share open fonts with friends, family and colleagues on such removable media. Please make sure that you share and share-alike as much as possible from what the Author(s) released and that you don't strip away useful information which may not be present in the binary font files themselves. Just remember that in the case where you sell the font, it has to come bundled with software. 2 ABOUT MODIFYING OFL LICENSED FONTS 2.1 Can I change the fonts? Are there any limitations to what things I can and cannot change? You are allowed to change anything, as long as such changes do not violate the terms of the license. In other words, you are not allowed to remove the copyright statement(s) from the font, but you could add additional information into it that covers your contribution. 2.2 I have a font that needs a few extra glyphs - can I take them from an OFL licensed font and copy them into mine? Yes, but if you distribute that font to others it must be under the OFL, and include the information mentioned in condition 2 of the license. 2.3 Can I charge people for my additional work? In other words, if I add a bunch of special glyphs and/or OpenType/Graphite code, can I sell the enhanced font? Not by itself. Derivative fonts must be released under the OFL and cannot be sold by themselves. It is permitted, however, to include them in a larger software package (such as text editors, office suites or operating systems), even if the larger package is sold. In that case, you are strongly encouraged, but not required, to also make that derived font easily and freely available outside of the larger package. 2.4 Can I pay someone to enhance the fonts for my use and distribution? Yes. This is a good way to fund the further development of the fonts. Keep in mind, however, that if the font is distributed to others it must be under the OFL. You won't be able to recover your investment by exclusively selling the font, but you will be making a valuable contribution to the community. Please remember how you have benefitted from the contributions of others. 2.5 I need to make substantial revisions to the font to make it work with my program. It will be a lot of work, and a big investment, and I want to be sure that it can only be distributed with my program. Can I restrict its use? No. If you redistribute a Modified Version of the font it must be under the OFL. You may not restrict it in any way. This is intended to ensure that all released improvements to the fonts become available to everyone. But you will likely get an edge over competitors by being the first to distribute a bundle with the enhancements. Again, please remember how you have benefitted from the contributions of others. 2.6 Do I have to make any derivative fonts (including extended source files, build scripts, documentation, etc.) publicly available? No, but please do share your improvements with others. You may find that you receive more than what you gave in return. 2.7 Why can't I use the Reserved Font Name(s) in my derivative font names? I'd like people to know where the design came from. The best way to acknowledge the source of the design is to thank the original authors and any other contributors in the files that are distributed with your revised font (although no acknowledgement is required). The FONTLOG is a natural place to do this. Reserved Font Name(s) ensure that the only fonts that have the original names are the unmodified Original Versions. This allows designers to maintain artistic integrity while allowing collaboration to happen. It eliminates potential confusion and name conflicts. When choosing a name be creative and avoid names that reuse almost all the same letters in the same order or sound like the original. Keep in mind that the Copyright Holder(s) can allow a specific trusted partner to use Reserved Font Name(s) through a separate written agreement. 2.8 What do you mean by "primary name as presented to the user"? Are you referring to the font menu name? Yes, the requirement to change the visible name used to differentiate the font from others applies to the font menu name and other mechanisms to specify a font in a document. It would be fine, for example, to keep a text reference to the original fonts in the description field, in your modified source file or in documentation provided alongside your derivative as long as no one could be confused that your modified source is the original. But you cannot use the Reserved Font Names in any way to identify the font to the user (unless the Copyright Holder(s) allow(s) it through a separate agreement; see section 2.7). Users who install derivatives ("Modified Versions") on their systems should not see any of the original names ("Reserved Font Names") in their font menus, for example. Again, this is to ensure that users are not confused and do not mistake a font for another and so expect features only another derivative or the Original Version can actually offer. Ultimately, creating name conflicts will cause many problems for the users as well as for the designer of both the Original and Modified versions, so please think ahead and find a good name for your own derivative. Font substitution systems like fontconfig, or application-level font fallback configuration within OpenOffice.org or Scribus, will also get very confused if the name of the font they are configured to substitute to actually refers to another physical font on the user's hard drive. It will help everyone if Original Versions and Modified Versions can easily be distinguished from one another and from other derivatives. The substitution mechanism itself is outside the scope of the license. Users can always manually change a font reference in a document or set up some kind of substitution at a higher level but at the lower level the fonts themselves have to respect the Reserved Font Name(s) requirement to prevent ambiguity. If a substitution is currently active the user should be aware of it. 2.9 Am I noBg~;U84DݛC؂ $'Wc+Q@eoj#xJ;d ktTElIBZۏ1~ٗEߌG#[bM^[nY=v35&V=lq: 7^ELn.['mUI qX6 {OC?ܙ8_*`~u`3H\rV3Y2 wqW5>|;Z RDQNVġA'|,Q8 6uE ֬pM wС )!ܑUFSBdB[#֝ܫC=Jlݟ@^t- Oc}H^抾8ڨ]JdHȨ.3ޒ&ШsJrWjszX0z=VT֬J@:Q$y⦍SsH},Ico S:C' Sfl j f;xT0v稨qPZJYjz<L7lwqڨ9V8\j& :GGQS<Gu9Yls(ݷӶj2bEz|%J: Ojhw~ )5uԢyeڽ[5zDy#m^,dkcvg9q\/G𞥪0HmcKu U71@%4*q7kaekƭ6aj>]u3l4yG>[id{ Mۨ1q]E}1_?W)nB+|b 1]晡%*6ʫn5^|9_aD#Pը֡VcbKVFLbjB*;'嬻vlⶥzR=5Æ]\zEݢXR)#wٓYZFj!U}ksjrtvF/k.^[_J=2|ZZ5Qj:&a<܁WBPk> gGR[.QOu6Ww%H-ǨƸ;HMS<ԌrGZ̹;MirJ:U]^]-jH㐃3]Dx7Xk7'&"DęnKVm˰yȯ ھG60J\;]:ַdp+p#Ү HDۂ q;ݬu+|ҠPpƣmJX^O=wlEB=OeğzMX8+ּ:{׉L8Cw5]jƠkoc/֒O.()\ޥ^dw6_jֹuW |F +F NTB8i559ֹozúCNu_v7 Ioָ[R.CbuIߎ}k*Uֻq9g]I.<=,p+n)=I֭YMkPԋi[BkMKd1v j˷\3ί.SN%O~tZf9qlg̻5Q\<ǩvΪ\ci )6MqwkNl'ER#8;<($~URzX)J+VZAPNA>b9^ʹ֫O U99q8ɣ\JiXcT#$jw W%Y%lǀ Kkl+OsVƙzKG{ *>CڪF+munS783G}dNI48g9 :^~BNh#oUkRi#0OZɿ!=3%+ZI!r.65ڠr$ҼL,jصԷ'KnEΖkϱ8!+2#[ڇqܑS(\`e|8Da \ι& $WgS)vګ\jA8'e5N1Y76sQ]٭q7$¨ϩ\)Ұn֩\jN;kxDM]}˂p=kփ>OJM_(xpwn[E8'J¾`s4뫽H~zW)jN |R }|ak)ֹk] #;VƾOq5N}9nZ!qn=k<_W"u&[)v:"ï<4FO0c=국HA~a+ <Ҳ&f<m ( 0U @ɬe$o9l$h*Q d+TFFq\83˲BP+׭p'j]w\BNľ#YZg |BK^ּɉ"[X*<@'9dfNs^)r&E@fRVO*ݣޖ2J)eU>jЕ⢉p==N+ظRJFZ%p?:.=O99ٗQaRs>Cn3iԣҧPdT=0/XTۃL] "\A-o-A\=֤2㠪&ȡ7*-6HgG?aUIϥ'(\/vSEdq\RsO[W&.KJJې@U/q~Gzjʊ{囯֓o9ϵs_AkeL27"~:3~:SR3`C\lɖEzu.&]Mh;pH&E>[=@X9ۂzU6Y4k&k6UV/[8Nr[RN犵πy52iLC5:{O5un\Jc=kFVN6ۚcwSZd\m.ҷ0k W)O0mw*%905Q'?Zֱ:$_g=XoJ.K*L-5Z sLמI%H5dUd` #E5r\5~$Qtn|Y4gs;Uk)/VQSZIOOZ-õJȡkZP6kvG\S*)"<?a9je@T /[-ˁ1D$O(cwq*ݸG#u[,q+Py$م,xF> WCg@cV[^9(ST;p8zz"Zy8 4AXRI4URcA"+LB_igS[]L!T PlU֟'T1 F֥Ɯ=G ֑NE/jdt񻨫Tՙq9s?8<Ӽxn'mv]Uj$w%K$cSEo:bEj[03duL02 \6<ʖ͐`tr]wGG_ `Lk|Sk٥Q2cXCgs_θM@ʒsEp{Y4*>] i/|־ޛEJ;ŌEzԢ*P7κ幹[nl= a˵wXTg74pqWcnB(j55W2m)9;Sk+TsƲ#pCi]4ϳ͎պ9e'wo࿊jlۛqp:/ 'থ#۵I"o~ҿs*:;y/Ut*8WJQ*3=Q-2Wkwoh~xEQByU'y6kE;:zz,WRz1X5-ZR|kVt˴,G +@xEA$tfxc0%-0.F"y]/fkp@<xwM!)k4^K6y?^ھplhQ"^տZ1k}UGy_87z2!R1Yr{C*4C^+DSW+iNwHrkr{vG'w Ow1!SEzXiKhtV1jό~7 բ V!/i(@8z|GI'ftk 'TP\8VpZ)sW:*XiSZup`;q'L/#X6s+lq:@e$ 5i? iޤwj:{ |q[Bn|\02`i5wpVD+Iڽ(9SK9D)Nz,zdڦڵ܉SǗˢBrp`;W?X{b&͒Aǡ؅EvT֞Tqҳx:̙ҳxb yD&ޭKrc^mݓ3*N.aæy:*TZQ凵zA7ȉYsYa\a<+K$NZryU^mqy)Ϯ?JղŌx%:ygfF9KOqOA^*S k)cϴlkzF`IydK{ zS g#UtF.:w!E@]!!RHVVQ85)Eoڬ8lsYoq>Փz ߶9Eǧ9P@+?ʱEL5-4yj;'{V,$ 9.~hQH߃[ַh5@30$Q,_pjyu2WCwľ"M9qn+b%nyI?d"$=>RMJML2+Q*[.bۗabDžZ{3Տ ^D.u|CxJ|:#QשilP+bX|z(*~m唵ԧ2 06E #jش%FԖ&Z-lf{ U< OgKG&,czW aRmI~O25˔mnCfbƪ/򯲃QI7&ܝRy[=+J wDAӔ9=ղ_5gb aKj?=sһ + DdSzt`ZؖNOJ펆Fx=5&m~ЛeZ; dw]7 9_ک˰ӹ̦ w\Nf( =3Vvr}yeӷ!=y5\TTCE)֎gMsK0GZ!=s^r~UZ]4݈g؍^W'Jۂb4e89A Ehq?mfBʽ.Ba̘p3hy_SUƈ?z3h&J hdjz p@f\`.
